What's in my bookcase
I like to read a lot. Reading inspires me and enlarges my horizon. I recently borrowed a book from my neighbour (not design related). He said to me; “If I’m going to work on something I always first look what’s known about it already. So I don't have to invent the wheel again." And I thought “yes, your absolutely right”. Reading books can bring you on new thoughts/ideas and show you different perspectives. Creativity is a somewhat vague subject. We cannot define it, but we know it when we see it. Despite that their are people that have different ideas about design principles. I find it very interesting to understand and read about the ideas behind these principles because in a way they create a context that can be applied within design. I also often find quotes that I enjoy reading because they are often so simple but so well said and true.
So what design related books are actually on my bookshelf at the moment;
Logo Font and Lettering Bible, Lesly Cabarga
I’ve got this book as a present from my dad. I actually wanted it already for quite a while after a Polish designer suggested it to me. I can recommend this book to any graphic designer. The way it’s written (with a good sense of humour) makes it easy to understand. This book explains basic principals very well and has some nice quotes as; “Bad taste becomes good taste when done intentionally - and with good taste.” Joe Kimberling
The Secret Life of Logos, Lesly Cabarga
A fine book about logo design process. It’s a pity not all the logos that are being discussed can be seen from begin to start. Would have expected to see more sketches and the conceptual phase. Theirs also quite some bad constructed logo’s in this book. Despite their are a few nice interviews I wouldn't recommend it. This book proofs to me some clients make wrong choices if they aren't advised well. I do believe it is the designers responsibility to help the client choose the best design.
Sketching User Experiences, Bill Buxton
I can recommend this book to any client. Cause it will make you understand the process and importance of design/sketching in running a business. For example theirs a case study about Apple design and business which I found quite interesting.
This book is not only orientated on graphic design but most commonly on product design. I learned more about usability from it as well. I do think the personal stories Bill Buxton wrote could have been a bit shorter but it's a nice addition.
Tres Logos
I enjoy looking in this book now and then. Tres Logos is part of a series of books full with only logo’s. Not so keen on these type of books because their is not much to read. I like reading about graphic design otherwise there is not much to learn only to watch. The few pages of text in this book are in German as in English. Wouldn't recommend this book but it's a nice book to have in your collection. Especially if you have all 4 of them.
Other design books on my bookshelf;
- Flashdesign voor vormgevers (dutch), Hedwyg van Groenendaal
- Php voor het world wide web (dutch), Larry Ullman
- De toverspiegel van Maurits Cornelis Escher (dutch), Bruno Ernst
- Grafisch ontwerpen (dutch), David Dabner
- Art Directors’ Index to photographers No8,
I’m always interested in books I haven’t read before so if you can recommend me a book or want to share a list of your books, I would appreciate. Thanks in advance.
